The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Federal Capital Territory Council, in conjunction with an Indian hospital has organized a free Medicare for members to ensure that they all maintain good health  as they discharge their duties of informing the populace.

The medical outreach which dwelt on ascertaining Sugar Levels, Blood
Count, Blood Pressure, Malaria and Eye examination was well attended by members of NUJ with their families.

Speaking in an interview with the ABS, Chairman of the Council, Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche said the exercise marked a starting point as it has never happened and expressed optimism that it will be sustained even beyond his tenure with frequent endeavours beyond the one year cycle the Council has initiated.

He said besides the regular check-up that is mandatory for the healthy living of members, his administration intends to introduce a monthly exercise regime with better empowerment of the members as
all-encompassing measures aimed at keeping them healthy.

The Chairman said economic empowerment is one very critical area that also engenders good health and for this, the council has floated a co-operative society that will cater for the empowerment of its members.

According to the Business Development coordinator of the hospital, Mr.
Sam Echabor, the Community Social Responsibility gesture is just a
means of giving back to the society to enable indigent citizens’ access quality healthcare at affordable price.

Mr Echabor, while promising that the gesture is a continuous one, said
the hospital had in the recent past, partnered churches, corporate
organisations and markets to see that quality healthcare gets to all the nooks and crannies of the federation.

Some members of the Union that spoke with the ABS including Lady Uloma
Okorie, Comrades Gloria Josiah, and Emmanuel Tortiv described the free
medical outreach as a move in the right direction, affirming that with a guaranteed good health, members will be able to work harder and add
value to their work places.
