Another five hundred teachers will be recruited in Anambra State for enhanced teaching and learning.
Governor Willie Obiano disclosed this during the 2019 World Teacher’s day celebration in Awka.
Governor Obiano who was represented by the Head of Service Mr Harry Uduh said he is aware of the shortage of teachers in the education system of the State and as such will work towards addressing it and other challenges facing teachers in the State.
In an address, the President Nigeria Union of Teachers Dr, Muhammed Nasir Idris represented by Chief Anthony Ngia said there is need for a policy redirection for enhanced occupational and social status of teachers.
Dr Idris expressed gratitude to Federal government for keeping faith with global commitment of honouring teachers, especially for the sustenance of the President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award, which he noted has inspired a sense of belonging, hope and dignity amongst teachers in Nigeria.
In a welcome address, the State Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers Comrade Nonye Chibueze thanked Governor Obiano, who she described as education friendly, for his support to teachers.
The Chairman House Committee on Basic Education Sir Ejike Okechukwu, reminded teachers of their responsibility as Managers in the Education Sector.
Contributing an educationist, Dr Chinelo Okechukwu, while speaking on the theme “Young Teachers: the future of the profession”, said teaching profession is a vocation that calls for high standards of ethics and responsibility.
Others who spoke during the event include the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Basic Education Mr Nwabueze Nwankwo who represented the Commissioner Professor Kate Omenugha, the Chairman Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, Chief Patrick Ugboaja, Chief Anthony Ugozor, who chaired the event, emphasized the need to make teaching profession more attractive.
