The Anambra State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, has announced series of activities lined up to mark the 2019 African Safety Day and World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
The Sector Commander of the Corps, Mr Andrew Kumapayi made the disclosure during a press briefing at the Command’s Headquarters in Awka.
The theme for this year’s celebration, according to Mr Kumapayi, is ”Life is Not a Car Part,” and was chosen in line with the third Pillar of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 for safer vehicles.
Mr Kumapayi who also noted that the theme was drafted to enable the people reflect on the sanctity of life, adding that the Decade of Action Pillar three concerns the prevailing low standards of vehicles which contribute to a significant number of crashes and casualties.
He said that the objective of this pillar was to encourage deployment of improved vehicle safety norms and technologies for both passive and active safety, and implored governments to implement Road Safety policies and action plan that will address safer vehicles, as they play critical role in averting crashes and reducing the likelihood of serious injury in the event of a crash.
Mr Kumapayi, who also spoke about the corps’ consistency in the implementation of minimum vehicle standards, in line with global automobile advancements, said that the Federal Road Safety Corps has instituted various policies including the introduction and enforcement of the use of Speed Limiting Device for Commercial Vehicles, trucks, trailers and mini buses, and development of regulatory master plans for Articulated vehicles and training of tanker and trailer drivers.
He also said that investments have been made into research and public enlightenment over vehicular safety, and stated that plans are also underway for partnerships with automobile manufacturers as well as with the Nigeria Customs Service, to ensure that only vehicles certified safe are allowed into the nation, while safety components like child restraints and seat belt are being enforced and advocated for by the Corps.
The State Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps listed the activities for the forthcoming celebration to include lectures, motorcade rally, Jumaat prayer, executive walk and hospital visitation, and will later be rounded off by remembrance Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka, on Sunday.
