The state Director, National Orientation Agency NOA Barrister Charles Nwoji, has expressed worry about over recent increase in drug addiction among Nigerian youths .
Barrister Nwoji, who made the observation when he led the management team of the Agency on advocacy visit to the state Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Mr. Sule Momodu in his office in Awka said this has continued to threaten peace in communities .
Barrister Nwoji, who said that the essence of the visit was to cement the long standing relationship between NOA and the NDLEA, maintained that the two sister organizations have been sharing so many things in common, saying that the NDLEA, has been responding positively to the human oriented programmes of the Agency in the state.
The NOA Director, who briefed the Commander on the programme already executed by the Agency since last year to include, re-orientation programme for the youths out of school, drug abuse, cultism and exam-malpractice in the secondary schools across the state, opined that the Agency is in the process of talking with the University Vice Chancellors and the Provosts of colleges of Education in the state with a view to extending the programme to all tertiary institutions in the state.
The essence, according to him, was to orientate and sensitize the students of the higher institutions of learning on the inherent dangers of cultism, exam-malpractice and drug abuse as they grow and also seek the cooperation of the Commander in resource sharing so as to make the programme a huge success, thereby putting students on the right path.
Welcoming the NOA Director and his team in his office, the NDLEA, state Commander, Mr. Momoodu, said that the command was trying to do as much as it could to work with the Anambra state government and encourage it to know that as they fight crime, they should also fight drug abuse in the state.
The Commander, who noted that parents hold the key in the fight against drug abuse in the society, argued that the society at large has not done much in the fight against drug abuse and disclosed that Governor Willie Obiano has inaugurated a committee on drug abuse in the state as well as mounting pressure on drug demand reduction in the state.
The Assistant Director, Social Justice of NOA, Awka, Barrister Ifeoma Chijioke, thanked God for the great job NDLEA, is doing in the state, adding that the Commander has put his foot prints on the sands of time in the society through his dedication to duty.
