The Anambra State Government has asked teachers in the state to inculcate good morals and sound education in their students to reciprocate the teacher- friendly disposition of the present administration.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Basic Education, Professor Kate Omenugha, made the call during the Seventh Annual Conference of Chaplain Corps Policing Explores, CHAPOL, on moral values, held at Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, Awka.
The event which has its theme as “I have a Dream,” attracted the clergy, the academia, teachers and students from two- hundred –andsixty – three public secondary schools in the State.
CHAPOL is a non- governmental paramilitary organization, approved by the State Post Primary Schools Service Commission, PPSSC, to combat and eradicate moral decadence and other social vices among students of public schools.
Speaking at the conference, Professor Omenugha who commended CHAPOL for the initiative and support accorded this present administration, called on parents and teachers to be role models to their children and wards, as, according to her, they are the most influential book the children can read on the subject of character formation.
The immediate past Chairman of PPSSC, Lady Joy Ulasi, said that some challenges students face in actualizing their dreams often times lead them to choosing wrong courses in pursuit of their tertiary education, calling on parents to shun over-bearing influence and non-challant attitudes towards their children in order to enable them achieve their dreams in life.
On his part, the Chairman on the occasion who is also the Coordinator, Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship, South-East, Elder Paul Ulasi, called on the students to always pursue and see their dreams as realizable and encouraged the teachers to put in more efforts in nurturing students to become responsible citizens in order to secure a better society for the future generation.
A guest lecturer at the programme, Reverend Father Patrick Chukwuma, who spoke on the topic “How Do I Overcome the Enemies of My Dream,” outlined mental preparation, experimental preparation, visual preparation, hero preparation, physical preparation and spiritual preparation as six things to do in order to achieve one’s dream in life.
In their separate remarks, the Commandant General, Society for Chaplains in Nigeria CHAPOL, Bishop Moses Peters and the Anambra State Commandant of CHAPOL, Chaplain Joseph Ekwunife, urged the students to be visionary, tactful and resilient in their academic pursuits.
Some of the students who spoke to the ABS including Master Akachukwu Okoye, from New Era Secondary School, Nteje, and Miss Christabel Obiorah from Girls’ Secondary School, Awka, promised to put into practice all they had learnt during the conference and to also extend the knowledge to their fellow students.
The event featured unveiling of a book written by the state Commandant, decoration of outstanding individuals as the patrons of the CHAPOL, Anambra State, presentation of awards to the CHAPOL State Commandant and recitation of educational anthem by the students.
