The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has met with the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, and top officials of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency on the need to repair major roads in Nigeria, ahead of the end of the year trips.

It was learnt in Abuja over the weekend, that the meeting, which also had directors of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, state controllers of works and housing, and contractors of road projects, focused on how to make Nigerian roads motorable during the Yuletide.

Some of the roads to be fixed are the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, Sagamu-Mowe, Abraka-Agbor, Benin-Asaba, Auchi-Benin, Calabar-Ikom,Ogoja, Calabar-Itu-Uyo, Kontagora-Minna, Abuja-Lokoja, Ogbomoso-Ilorin, Jos-Panshin and Enugu-Onitsha.

The meeting also aimed at reviewing the state of all ongoing construction and rehabilitation work on the major roads, with a view to ensuring ease of movement during the season.

Mr. Fashola said it was the responsibility of the ministry to ensure that all the necessary things were put in place in order to facilitate smooth movement of travelers during the season.

He urged the FRSC to intensify campaigns against excessive speeding and driving by unlicensed drivers on highways.  He ordered his ministry’s director of Highways Construction and Rehabilitation to list out all arterial roads needing urgent attention and asked that work should commence immediately.

On his part, Dr Oyeyemi told the meeting about the arrangement that had been put in place by his agency to facilitate the movement of travellers during the season.
