More than two hundred widows from Nnokwa, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State have benefited from the yearly empowerment programme of Akachukwu Akonam Foundation.
The annual event culminates a year of providing moral, spiritual and physical support through a bi-monthly Nnokwa Widows Fellowship facilitated by the Non-governmental organizations.
That at Saint Stephen’s Anglican Church Nnokwa, the venue of the end of the year gathering, the women danced around to show their excitement to what has become an annual festival.
This year’s edition marks five years since Akachukwu Akonam Foundation, AAF vision of mentoring youths and empowering widows in Nnokwa, Idemili South Local Government Area have been championed.
Founded by Engineer Dr Simon Akachukwu-Ukpaka, it strives towards giving meaningful life to the youth and protect widows from financial vulnerability through sponsorships by independent donors from different communities and walks of life including the wife of the Governor, Dr Ebelechukwu Obiano.
In her speech, the Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Dr Mrs Obiano represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Reorientation, Dr Mitchelle Onugbolu praised the foundation for keeping with their mandate of helping the widows and said it is in line with her vision of transforming the lives of women and the vulnerable through her initiative, the Caring Family Enhancement Initiative.
Responding, the Founder of Akachukwu Akonam Foundation, Engineer Akachukwu-Ukpaka explained that for the past five years, the commitment of the organization has remained unwavering in ensuring a better life for women and youths.
While commending the founder of the foundation for sustaining the initiative, the Chairman on the Occasion, Venerable Emma Mbanugo told the widows that widowhood is not a curse or an excuse to be lazy and therefore urged them to properly put to work the gadgets used to empower them to be self reliant.
Highpoints of the event were the distribution of bags of rice and different food items including wrappers to the widows as well as empowerment of women with already established skills with generators, hair dryers, sewing machines, and grinding machines
