Nnamdi Azikiwe University auditorium Awka was yesterday filled to capacity as people from all works of life gathered for the fifty-third inaugural lecture.


The lecture with the themed “Gender Issue in Women Participation in Competitive Sport and Leadership to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria”, attracted eminent Nigerians including Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, the traditional ruler of Awka, Igwe Gibson Nwosu, among numerous others.


In her speech, the inaugural lecturer, Professor Oby Okonkwor, who is a Professor of Human Kinetics and Sport Management at UNIZIK, called for promotion of gender equity and empowerment of Women in Nigeria, stating that Nigerian women have encountered a number of problems while venturing into numerous fields of human endeavours.


She added that women participation in sports has been relatively very low when compared with their male counterparts.


In his speech, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Esimone represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Professor Frederick Odibo, described the fifty-third Inaugural Lecturer as a hardworking woman, who is hugely endowed intellectually and culturally.


Professor Esimone stated that gender issue is apt for discussion especially in the sphere of sports adding that participation in sports is crucial for the wellbeing of every individual.


Describing the lecture as apt, a University Don and a Professor of Medicine, Professor Richard Uwakwe and the Chairman on the occasion, Dr. Charles Ọkpara, thanked the inaugural lecturer for lending her voice to gender issue which according to them, will bring greater change to the society.


The event climaxed with book review and decoration of the inaugural lecturer with medal.
