The State Auditor General, Mr. Alex Onwuli has said that Anambra state since inception of the present administration has become a destination choice for development partners and investors.
Mr. Onwuli stated this at the 2019 stakeholders Audit Forum for the reports of the Auditor-General on the accounts of the state government for 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 financial year held in Awka.
The Audit Forum with the theme, “Transparency, Probity and Accountability in the Conduct of Government Business, a Panacea for good Governance”, attracted participants from Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, Civil Society Organizations, CSOs Permanent Secretaries and Academia among others.
Declaring the forum opened, Mr. Onwuli said the forum is necessitated by the fact that government is supposed to be inclusive, transparent and accountable to the citizenry as such, there is need for citizens to be adequately informed of the activities of government so as to hold it accountable.
He further disclosed that the forum is one of the key components of public financial management system which includes all phases of budget cycle starting from preparation, internal control and internal audit, procurement, monitoring, reporting and external audit.
In his address of welcome, the project coordinator, State and Local Governance Reform, SLOGOR, Project, Mr. Kingsley Orji described the theme as apt saying that it will reduce the level of corruption in the system and educate public officers on the need for them to be transparent, honest and accountable in management of public financial resources.
In a paper titled, “Imperative of transparency and accountability in the conduct of government Business” a facilitator, Sir Obi Okechukwu said that transparency serves as vehicle for facilitation of accountability in which governance and government business can be interrogated and leaders held answerable for their actions and inactions.
In an interview, one of the participants and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Trade and Commerce, Mr. Daniel Okoli, said participants should be aware of their duties of minimizing losses and other miscellaneous.
The audit forum was powered by the office of the state Auditor-General in collaboration with the State and Local Governance Reform Project.
