The need to ensure durability on roads in the state through quality assurance has been stressed.


This formed highpoint of speeches made during the second annual conference and general meeting organised by Nigeria Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers, Awka chapter.


The event held at the Anambra state Ministry of Works, Awka, was covered by Works Correspondent Ngozi Obileri.


The event was attended by all the highway and transportation engineers in the Ministry of Works, including the Commissioner for Works Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor, the Managing Director Anambra State Road Maintenance Agency, Engineer Emeka Okoye, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Barrister Emeka Ohuoha, and all directors in the ministry.


Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Works, Engineer Ifejiofor said that Anambra state is not just the best in good road network, but also the best in road maintenance, adding that the association helps the state in refreshing minds of highway and transportation Engineers in the state, since Anambra deals mostly on highways.


He noted that the state has improved so much on quality road construction and other aspects through the last communiqué of the Association presented to the government and commended the efforts of Anambra state Material Testing Laboratory for maintaining quality.


On his part, the Managing Director of Anambra Road Maintenance Agency, Engineer Okoye, said that in line with Governor Obiano’s zero pothole policy, the agency is carrying out massive attack on potholes this season, beginning with Anambra Central Senatorial District, after which they will move to Anambra North and Anambra South senatorial districts.


Speaking earlier, the National Chairman of the Association Engineer Oluyemi Oludayo who doubled as the chairman on the occasion, testified that he had a rough journey from a neighbouring state, from where he came into Anambra due to bad roads and praised Anambra state government for constructing and maintaining roads in the state.


He said that Anambra has produced many highway engineers and noted that the Ministry of works is the only ministry in the country with a functional laboratory apart from Lagos state, charging them not to compromise quality.


Earlier in a lecture, a member of the Association, Engineer Chris Ndubuisi identified inadequate drainage system, poor maintenance culture and human factor as factors affecting achieving quality roads in the country.


In a second lecture, Engineer Tony Nwafor said that quality control is the responsibility of all the key players in the road construction business, which demands that care must be taken to achieve the project’s life span.


In an address, the chairman Nigeria Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers, Awka chapter, Engineer Chidi Obiudu, said that Engineers in the state have succeeded in preventing gully erosions resulting from poor discharging points while constructing drainages, as all roads constructed in the state now have safe discharging points.
The event has its theme as “Redeeming our road infrastructure”.
