The Nigerian Bar Association Onitsha Branch has organised it’s 2019 Law week with the theme “Protecting The Legal Profession From Extinction, Adulteration And Infiltration“.


The event featured series of sessions where the lawyers brainstormed on issues challenging the profession with more emphasis on the theme of the week.


While addressing the lawyers during the Dinner and Award Night held at C-J Patterson Hall, All Saint Cathedral Onitsha, the Acting Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu noted that the theme for the celebration is apt considering the challenges facing the profession.


A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a fellow, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Mr Mike Ozokome in his speech maintained that lawyers must have regard for the rule of law and strive to build trust and confidence of their clients.


Earlier in an opening remarks the Chairman on the occasion and the Administrative Chief Judge Onitsha Judicial Division, Justice Ifeanyi Nweze commended the zeal and synergy that exist in Onitsha Bar Association saying that Anambra State lawyers are making wave in the country.


One of the key note speakers Professor Dike Amucheazi SAN identified lack of integrity and values, inadequate training of legal professionals as factors militating against the profession and called for reforms that would sanitize the profession.


In their separate addresses the Chairman Nigeria Bar Association Onitsha Branch Mr Ozoemena Erinne and the Chairman 2019 Bar Week Planning Committee Sir Ejike Ezenwa pointed out that infiltration into the profession by quacks and incessant harassment and arrest faced by members of the profession pose great danger to the profession.


The Special Assistant to the Governor on Legal Matters and Petroleum and one of the discussant Mrs Pat Igweike challenged the lawyers to strive to give back to the society by representing the indigent client, read widely as well as emulate good virtues while announcing the State Government efforts towards attracting an Appellate Court to Awka.


Highpoint of the event was presentation of award to some members who have distinguished themselves in their service.
