The attention of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service AiRS, has been drawn to the protest by Ozalla Obosi Landlords Association against what they claimed to be over taxation, intimidation and harassment by Anambra government agent.
The AIRS established under the Anambra State Revenue Administration law 2010 to make provisions for the administration and collection of revenue due to Anambra State Government and Local Government Councils, has the responsibility of ensuring effective and optimum collection of all revenue, including levies and penalties due to Anambra State Government under the relevant Federal and State laws. According to a release signed by the Deputy Director/Heath, Taxpayer Education and Enlightenment Team, Mrs. Sylvia Tochukwu-Ngige AiRS has fully automated all its system and with the full automation, cash transaction of every-revenue including levies and penalties due to Anambra State government is no longer possible as every transaction is now done in the bank of one’s choice with ANSSID number, as a must.
It further explained that as soon as transaction is complete, e-receipt is delivered straight to the taxpayer’s phone as there is nothing like manual receipt in AIRS thus the claim by Ozalla Landlords through their Leader stating that they paid certain amount and were given receipt less than the amount they paid is a mere claim because AiRS does not issue manual receipts. The release warned that anybody paying cash as far as revenue is concerned in Anambra State is taking a serious risk because any-time an audit is carried out, the whole money must be re-paid including penalties adding that if a case of bribery is discovered, a formal report should be made to AiRS, with facts as it does not encourage such.
