Residents of Anambra state have been urged to join hands with the state government to maintain clean and healthy environment.
Speaking in Awka, the Managing Director Anambra State Waste Management Agency, ASWAMA, Mr. Amechi Akora said state government has continued to expend huge resources to entrench a new sanitation culture and protect the environment.
Mr. Akora explained that the state procured and distributed collection and disposal equipment and materials to various parts of the state to reduce visibility of waste on roads but regretted that some individuals are still dumping refuse indiscriminately instead of using waste bins placed at strategic locations.
He explained that ASWAWA is collaborating with various market leaders and has agreements on modalities for daily waste collection and collection point from where the Agency collect them for onward disposal while compactors were also deployed every night to collect waste from the market to discourage traders from dumping them on roads.
Mr. Akora said ASAWA is also collaborating with various youth groups in sanitation exercise who also help in mobilizing and sensitizating people in their various communities to ensure that everybody is involved in clearing and protecting the environment.
According to Mr. Akora, ASWAWA is also working with students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu University in clean up exercises and promoting campaign for right attitude towards the environment and is equally taking the campaign to primary and secondary schools to inculcate basic sanitation ideals and principles in children early in life while more refuse collection facilities would be deployed to schools soon.
He restated that ASWAWA would intensify collection of sanitation levies to enable government sustain the drive to keep the environment clean and healthy.
