The Executive Director of Women Empowerment Action Network, a Lagos- based Non-Governmental Organisation, Dr Mrs Eucharia Egwuonwu has described the Wife of Governor of Anambra State, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano (Osodieme) as an exemplary humanitarian who has not allowed her change in status over the last five years as Governor’s wife to interfere with her life of service and care for the less privileged. 


Dr Mrs Egwuonwu made the assessment at a Press briefing in Awka following the peer review findings on the activities of Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE) NGO of the wife of Governor of Anambra. 


According to Dr Egwuonwu, we took it upon ourselves as part of our review programme on women empowerment programmes to follow the trail of activities of CAFE across some communities in Anambra State and can confirm the authenticity of it’s free housing projects for widows in towns like Ebenato, Amichi,Amatutu Agulu,  Isioye Umunya where Mrs Igboamalu the beneficiary is late and at Amakwa, Ozubulu which is nearing completion.

One common feature in the testimony we heard in all the places is that they only got to see Mrs Obiano the day she handed over keys to the beautiful houses and have been living in peace. It is quite commendable to note that she has built same house for twenty seven other indigent widows.


According to Dr Egwuonwu, we also tracked CAFE women Skills Acquisition Training and Empowerment programme beneficiaries and can testify to the apparent success recorded among some indigent women and youths. “How can anyone ignore the multiplier effect and economic impact of the activities of a young lady Favour at 3-3 Onitsha who learnt tailoring and fashion designing and has since engaged the services of four others, or Ezinne Salon at Ifite Awka a product of CAFE Hairdressing  training who has also trained over fifteen others on the trade.”


“We also encountered young Chikamso, one of the over 100 beneficiaries of CAFE Free Cleft Lip Surgery at Ugbenu, Awka North Local Government who has started school. Not to mention the numerous free Prosthetic Limbs which appear to be very popular amongst the physically challenged persons. The amazing aspect of CAFE programmes is that it is funded by philanthropists who are duly recognized by the organisation. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that when it comes to charity, there is no partisan politics as we noted that many prominent sons and daughters of Anambra State who donate and support Mrs Obiano’s initiatives are across party lines.”


Indeed, the CAFE assessment programme is one of the most authentic and successful we have conducted in recent times and we are encouraged that it is sustainable. We are therefore proud to be associated with such success like CAFE and we urge all men and women of goodwill to support such noble initiative.
