The Anambra State Government has intensified enforcement of waste management and sanitation laws in the state to ensure a conducive atmosphere capable of attracting investors to the State.
The Special Task force constituted by the Anambra State Waste Management Agency in collaboration with Operation Clean and Health Anambra state, the OCHA Brigade began the enforcement in Awka.
Houses, hospitals, churches, schools and residential buildings located at Eze-Awka Street off Onwurah Street have for years been suffering all kinds of health and environmental challenges allegedly caused by a soaker away from a building in the street that discharges into drainages in the area.
The Task Force of the Anambra State Waste Management Agency which disclosed that it had since last year warned and advised the occupants of the building to stop the practice.
embarked on a final warnings to occupants of the building after which the building will be sealed off till the necessary corrections in the waste management of the building is approved.
Addressing journalists shortly after inspecting the area, the Head of Compliancy of ASWAMA, Mr. Obinna Okeke said that the agency in several occasions received complaints regarding the discharge of human waste into drainages which poses a great danger to the residents of the area.
He disclosed that the developer will be charged to court and appealed to developers and residents of the state to obey sanitation and environmental laws of the state which stipulates that all human and domestic waste should be channeled into the septic tank as it constitute health hazards to the people.
A resident of the area, Mrs. Nonyelum Nwosu who lamented the hardship residents of the area have been passing through due to the polluted air from the human waste while Mrs. Oluchukwu Okeke who is a Nurse in a hospital in that locality said that during rainy season most of the patients are forced out of their facility because of the odour and commended the state government and ASWAMA for ensuring that all adhere to the lay down rules and regulations .
