A mobile court set up by the state government at Onitsha Terminal Park in Onitsha has remanded one Mr. Mike Chigbo into Correctional centre for allegedly sabotaging the Anambra state government revenue generating system.
Others, including Messrs Afamefuna Onyia, Abuchi Ogbuu and Chinonso Okpalajiaku, were equally arraigned at the mobile court for alleged unauthorized sale of fake emblems and stickers from other states to commercial bus drivers in Onitsha metropolis.
The suspects, who were accused of contravening section sixty-seven C of 1991 Road Traffic Laws of Anambra State, pleaded not guilty to their charges, and their cases were adjourned to twenty-eight January and fourth February, 2020 respectively.
Counsels to the first and second set of defendants, Barristers Chiagozie Amahalu and Alo Victor had prayed the court to grant the accused bail, arguing that their offences were bailable under section seventy-three C of the Administrative Criminal Justice Law 2020.
While Mr. Chigbo was remanded in Correctional centre, Onitsha pending the determination of his bail application, the six others were granted bail each at the cost of fifty thousand naira, one surety, two passport photographs, evidence of National Identification and affidavit of means.
Speaking to newsmen, the State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr.
Christian Mmadubuko, said the state government is determined to clamp down on touts, and block loopholes through which government has been losing revenues’ meant for the collective good of Ndi-Anambra.
Contributing, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Community Liaison, Honourable Hippolite Ekwegbalu, explained that the state government had written to motor parks in the state to introduce authorised agents responsible for the sale of 2020 emblems and stickers in the state.
Items recovered from the suspects includes fake emblems, stickers, receipts, tickets and some cash collected from their victims.
Also, twelve more illegal revenue collectors who were arrested after the court had dismissed, would be arraigned on a later date.
