Anambra State government has appealed to residents to desist from activities that are capable of compromising t drainages around the state.


The Managing Director, Anambra State Clear Drainage and Forest Reservation Agency, Mr. Chido Obidiegwu, made the appeal while his team was responding to a distress call about the activities of some residents and shop owners, who are blocking passage of water in major drainages in Awka.


Some of the areas visited were Igweze Street off Kwata Junction, High Court Road Amikwo, Dignity Layout Amikwo, and Zik’s Avenue all in Awka.


At each of the affected areas, the drainages were either filled up with sand, or blocked with refuse, while others had either structures erected on them or removed entirely.


Mr. Obidiegwu, who took time to inspect the water channels, spoke to residents and business owners around the areas about the obvious environmental dangers of their activities, especially during the rainy season and appealed to them to help the government by cleaning the gutters and desisting from activities that can jeopardize the environment.


He directed defaulters to work on their drainages within the next three days or risk stiff penalty as his Agency remains resolute in sustaining the environmental sanity of the statel The Special Assistant to the Governor on Beautification and Leisure Parks, Mr. Henry Anatogu, who participated in the monitoring, advised the people to see the attention they give to their water channels as a complementary effort to government’s drive towards a better Anambra environment.


Some of the residence including Mr. Ezechukwu Okoye, who has live around the Igweze area for over forty years, Mrs. Mary Chinwuko, a business owner around the same area, and Mr. Kene Umeadi, who is the first resident of Dignity Layout, Amikwo, Awka, gave their opinions about the operation and hailed the team for its intervention in the areas.
