A bill for a law to establish the Anambra State Clear Drainage and Forest Preservation Agency has scaled second reading at the Anambra State House of Assembly.
The bill which is sponsored by the Executive Arm of Government scaled second reading during yesterday’s plenary.
House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim was there and reports that the bill seeks to establish the Anambra State Clear Drainage and Forest Preservation Agency for the purpose of ensuring clean drainage system and sewages as well as creating and maintaining forests in the state.
Leading debate on the bill, the Majority Leader of the House, Dr. Nnamdi Okafor explained that the bill will empower the Agency to enunciate and execute strategies to prevent drain blockages in the state, develop and implement policies that will ensure non litering of drainages with dirt.
He further stated that the bill when passed into law will ensure the removal of all forms of existing constructions and the prevention of any further constructions that compromise waterways and drainages in Anambra State.
On his part, the member representing Orumba North Constituency, Chief Emeka Aforka who described the bill as a welcome development noted that it will see to the development of Mmamu forest into a tourist site which can generate revenue for the state.
In their contributions, the member representing Njikoka One Constituency, Dr. Timothy Ifedioramma, his Aguata One Constituency counterpart, Dr Carter Umeh and the member for Oyi Constituency, Hon. Charles Obimma added that the bill will develop and promote responsive, affordable, well informed and decentralized forestry advisory services to farmers, communities and the forest industry.
Speaker of the House, Honourable Uche Okafor read out the bill for the second time, while the lawmakers supported it through a voice vote.
