To equip the young for future leadership positions, school functionaries in public secondary schools in Anambra state have undergone a one-day training session at Girls’ Secondary School, Awka, the state capital.


Speaking at the event, the Chairman, Anambra State Post Primary Schools Service Commission, PPSSC, Honourable Ifeoma Okaro charged parents and school authorities to give the elected students all needed supports to excel in their call for service.


Honourable Okaro said the students were elected for their proven leadership potential , reminding them of their roles which include leading the students, serving as bridges between students and school authorities, as well as being custodians of their schools’ rules and regulations.


The Awka Zonal Director of Education, Mrs Blessing Oguagha, and the Principal of Girls’ Secondary School, Awka, Lady Wini Ibezim, who enjoined the school functionaries to see leadership as serving and inspiring people to do things they never thought they could do, expressed hope that the training will broaden their knowledge of leadership, refocus and sharpen their intellect for the avoidance of abuse of power.


Some school prefects, including Masters Peter Nweke from Community Secondary School, Abba, Emmanuel Ibekeme from Okija Grammar School, Okija and Stephanie Charles from Girls’ Secondary School, Awka, promised to put into practice all they have been taught at the event.


The event, attended by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Secondary Education, Mr. Paul Ifeanyi, and the State Director of Guidance and Counseling, Services, PPSSC, Awka, Mrs Eucharia Ilika, featured paper presentations from resource persons, oath taking, as well musical presentation by the students.
