Governors of the South East geopolitical zone have adopted the Community Policing Initiative of the Nigeria Police.


The Governors took the decision in a ten point communiqué presented during the South East Geo-Political Zone Security Summit, at the Enugu State Event Center.


Government House Correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that the Summit was at the instance of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu.


The Governors first held a closed door meeting at the Government House, Enugu.


Chairman of the forum Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, host Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, and Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, represented by his Deputy, Professor Placid Njoku, attended the event.


Others who attended include Traditional Rulers of the region, Security Chiefs, including the Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Immigration, Nigeria Correctional Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the Clergy, among others.


While pointing out that they must continually seek the support of the Communities, the Inspector General of Police Mr Adamu said that it is part of the strategies of the Nigeria police to strengthen internal security arrangement, stressing that the initiative is people oriented.


Presenting the communiqué, Chairman of the South East Governors’
Forum, Governor Umahi said that having reviewed the workings of the initiative, it is in line with what they are already doing in their respective States, which necessitated its acceptance.


Speaking on behalf of religious leaders in the region, the Archbishop Ecclesiastical Province of Enugu, and the Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese Most Reverend Emmanuel Chukwuma called on the federal government to declare herdsmen terrorists, asking the government and the Inspector General of Police to address the issue of kidnap of priests, multiple road blocks in the region, among others.


The President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo World-Wide, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, said that people of the region have very little confidence in the Nigeria Police, calling on them to work towards restoring public confidence in the Force .


Keynote Speaker, Professor Felix Asogwa presented a paper on Strategic partnership for effective community policing in the South East.
