A workshop on Plea Bargain for Magistrates and Director of Public Prosecutions in Anambra State has ended in Awka.
The workshop was organized by Rule of Law and Anti Corruption (ROLAC), British Council and European Union in Collaboration with the Anambra State Judiciary, as well as Ministry of Justice.
Plea Bargain is a process whereby the defendant or defence counsel and the prosecutor enter into negotiations to agree a mutually acceptable way of disposing a criminal case.

Speaking during the event, the Attorney General of Anambra State and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Uju Nworgu explained that plea bargaining is the latest trend in the criminal Justice system globally, and noted that Anambra State is aligning itself with the international best practices, as far as criminal Justice system is concerned.
Dr. Nworgu who described the workshop as timely, due to the enormity of Case files before the various courts, especially the magistrate courts, maintained that the workshop will yield the required result.
The Anambra State Programme Cordinator, ROLAC programme, Josephine Onah pointed out that ROLAC is supporting the Anambra State government in implementing its administration of criminal Justice law, supporting the development of plea bargaining, as well as building the capacity of the judicial personnel, vital to the implementation of the Justice system.
Rule of Law and Anti Corruption’s (ROLAC) objective is to enhance good governance, strengthened rule of law and curb corruption, through criminal Justice reform, access to Justice for women, children and people with disabilities among others.
