Sites of erosion control projects embarked upon by the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP, in Anambra State have been inspected for proper monitoring and evaluation.


During the inspection, NEWMAP team had interactive session with a number of people that benefited from Resettlement Action Plan, RAP, livelihood support, efficient cooking stove and other programs of NEWMAP in the State.


Some of the areas inspected include erosion control project site that has connected a hitherto separated Uruokpala, Umudunu and Adagbe villages in Abagana.


Others are Omagba, Nkpor Flyover, Neros Plaza, as well as Amachalla erosion control projects located in Nkpor and Awka respectively, which were at various degrees of completion.


Some beneficiaries who spoke to newsmen, including Mr Patrick Chukwumelu, Chief Godfrey Nzeakor, Sir George Ilorah, Mr Innocent Obasi and Mrs Anthonia Ofordile, were full of appreciation to the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, the World Bank and NEWMAP for saving them from threats of erosion.


Anambra State Project Coordinator for NEWMAP, Mr. Michael Ivensor, said over twenty five thousand people affected by thirteen erosion control projects in the State were empowered by NEWMAP, calling on people to be proactive in checking erosions by desisting from indiscriminate dumping of refuse and building without approvals.


Expressing satisfaction with the level of success recorded at the project sites, as well as impact made on the people, Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist, Mr Mukhtar Yakubu Tanko, Social Safeguard and Livelihood Specialist, Mrs Ruth Mishelia, both at the Federal Project Management Team of NEWMAP, thanked the State Government for making counterpart funds available to compensate people living along gully corridors.
