The National Orientation Agency has called on Nigerians to embrace those core values that always unites the nation by upholding the spirit of acceptance and accommodation of divergent views.

Its Director-General, Mr. Garba Abari, who made the call at Otuocha in Anambra East Local Government Area, during a one-day peace advocacy programme, said peace remains the only index for sustainable growth and development.

The programme tagged “Building a People of Peace” attracted community, religious and political leaders, during which resource persons drawn from the security agencies made presentations.

Mr. Abari, represented by the Enugu State Director of the Agency, Mr.
Isaac Onukwube, said the Agency will continue to convene the nationwide peace programme, calling on citizens to key into peace advocacy initiatives of the Federal Government.

Anambra State Director of the Agency, Mr Charles Nworji, who identified dwindling natural resources, inequitable distribution of democracy dividends, farmers/herders clashes as some of the factors depriving peace in the nation, said Governor Willie Obiano has done much to ensure sustainable peace in the State through effective security network, calling for increased awareness on the importance of peace in achieving sustainable growth.

The Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Transition Committee, Mr Obi Nweke, represented by Mr Eri Chike, and the Chairman on the occasion, Chief Ralph Igwah, said the peace advocacy programme was necessary, owing to past communal crisis witnessed in the area.

Some of the participants at the event, including Reverends Canon Akachukwu Ikedilo of Saint Peter’s Anglican Church, Aguleri, Sylvanus Onyeacholam, of Immanuel Church Umueri, and Mrs Stella Nneli, who identified communication gap, wrong usage of the Social Media as some of the factors instigating crisis in the area, called on the National Orientation Agency to sustain and extend the peace advocacy programme for maximum impact.
