The Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor has announced the indefinite suspension of all the activities lined up to mark this year’s Mothers,’ Sunday throughout the Diocese.


A statement signed by Bishop Ezeokafor said the decision was reached after considering the present situations in Nigeria, regarding the threat of Coronavirus plague and in full consultation with the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ekwulobia, Most Reverend Peter Okpaleke According to the statement, the usual Easter confession will hold but certain distance between the penitents themselves as well as between them and the confessor is to be maintained.


Bishop Ezeokafor stated that Public Masses of all types, other liturgical activities, including Holy Week anEaster celebrations are suspended, as from Monday 30th March, 2020, till further notice.


The statement urged Priests to celebrate Private Masses, praying for the entire people of God as the Catholic Church continues to respect these and other directives with maximum caution… in mind.

He further said that church will continue to pray for God’s intervention in the present situation and exhorts pastors of souls and their equivalents to continue to provide for the spiritual needs of believers entrusted to their pastoral care within the confines of these particular and universal directives.
