There was joy and jubilation last Saturday in Ogbunike Community in Oyi local council area, as the Traditional Ruler, Igwe John Umenyiora distributed over one thousand bags of ten kilogrammes of rice, cartons of noodles and tin tomatoes to widows, the sick and elderly to help cushion the effect of the lockdown occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic.
The food items were donated by children of the monarch.


While addressing the beneficiaries in his palace, Igwe Umenyiora commended Governor Willie Obiano for the stimulus packages recently distributed to the elderly who are seventy years of age and above in all the communities in the State.

Igwe Umenyiora explained that the beneficiaries were selected from villages and kindreds which made it possible for them to get the targeted beneficiaries.

He said that the beneficiaries were present to pick the items except persons that cannot move out from their houses in which case someone would be sent with the items to such a person, to make sure it gets to them.
Igwe Umenyiora also commended Ndi Ogbunike for their total compliance to the State Government’s directives on the stoppage of burial, wedding and other social gatherings due to the COVID19.


He also called on wealthy Ogbunike individuals to come to the rescue of the vulnerable people in the community who cannot support themselves at this critical period.

On his part, the Caretaker Chairman of Ogbunike Progress Union, Comrade Chukwugozie Ikegulu, commended the royal family for the palliatives.
He commended some indigenes of the community that have already started reaching out to their kindred and urged others to follow suit so as to help fight the effects of the virus.

The Traditional Prime Minister of the community, Chief Anene Osadebe said it was not an easy task to coordinate but early preparation was the key to the success recorded that day.

He said in other to comply with the State Government’s directives on social distancing they gave ten feet apart while sharing the items and then grouped crowd in four persons giving a gap of about three metres.

Mrs. Beruce Mmeaduka who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries praised the Igwe for helping not just the widows but all the sick and elderly in the community, praying God to continue to bless him and his children.
