Anambra state government has embarked on aggressive recording of deficient buildings across the state as part of measures to protect lives and property of its citizenry.
Government House Correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that
officials of the state Physical Planning Board, led by the Executive Chairman, Barrister Chike Maduekwe kickedl off the exercise at Motorcycle Parts International Market Nnewi, where many buildings were marked, either for being structurally deficient or for lack of approval.
Though the market was not in session, the leadership of the market, led by its chairman, Mr. Obinna Okechukwu conducted the team round the market, where it was observed that some of the structures were built on waterways and causing flooding during the rains.
Developers of two buildings under construction at Uruagu Nnewi and residential buildings at Otolo Nnewi, without approval were also summoned to appear before the Board.
Officials of the state Physical Planning Board also demolished a building, built directly under high tension cables at Umuanuka, Otolo, Nnewi for posing great danger for potential occupants.
Speaking during the exercise , Barrister Maduekwe disclosed that the developer did not approach the Board for approval noting that if he did, approval would not have been given for such risky project.
Barrister Maduekwe explained that officials of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC have inundated their office with letters of developers, who have been recalcitrant about putting up structures under high tension cables, which pose great risk to life and property of occupants.
He directed owners of the marked buildings to appear before the Board on Monday or risk the buildings being demolished, warning that developers, who build such projects without approval will be arrested and jailed.
The House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Lands and member representing Idemili North Constituency, Honourable Arthur Chiekwu, who was part of the exercise, reminded people of laws against such illegal structures , urging people to always do the right thing to avoid the wrath of the law.
The Acting General Manager of the Board, Mr. Nwabufo Anene and security operatives among others were part of the exercise.
