In line with the State Government’s directive to inaugurate COVID-19 Taskforce in all the markets across the state, the Onitsha Main Market has taken the lead by inaugurating its own taskforce, prior to the opening of markets today.
The inauguration, performed by the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, Wealth Creation and Revenue Mobilization, Honorable Uchenna Okafor took place at Bright Street Onitsha.
The members of the taskforce were drawn from all the adjoining markets in the area.
Addressing members, Honorable Okafor commended the turnout and cooperation of the traders at the inauguration which he said is in line with the state government directive to check the spread of Coronavirus.
He charged them to enforce all government policy in the market to ensure that traders and their customers wear their face masks, observe social distancing and hand washing rituals.
Also speaking, the President General, Anambra state AmalgamatedTraders Association, ASMATA, Chief Ikechukwu Ekwegbalu, who expressed gratitude to Governor Willie Obiano for his support to traders, promised that traders will work tirelessly to ensure that their markets will not derail to avoid shutting down.
The Chairman, Onitsha Main Market Traders Union, Mr. Kenneth Onyeka, who regretted that some people are not yet convinced that the virus is real, thanked the Governor Obiano, Honorable Okafor and their President General for all their supports and encouragement, promising not to disappoint them as they will ensure that the virus do not gain entrance into the market.
Some market leaders, including Comrade Chinedu Chukwudebelu, Mr. Gilbert Ofodile and Nze Mike Nwafor, expressed joy and gratitude to Governor Obiano for harkening to their cry and promised to work tirelessly with the government to ensure the enforcement of its policies in the market.
On their parts, Messers Amechi Okafor, Henry Onyemaechi and Emmanuel Idoko disclosed their readiness to ensure that nobody enters the market without their personal hand sanitizer and face mask since most of their customers are coming from neighbouring states with index cases.
Highpoint of the ceremony was inspection of guard of honour by the Commissioner accompanied by the market executive.
