The appeal by Anambra State Government to church leaders to assist in
enforcing COVID-19 directives among the faithful yielded fruits as
almost all the churches visited by the ABS in the commercial city of
Onitsha and environs during church services recorded ninety
five percent compliance.
Correspondent Ogochukwu Oranu who visited some churches reports that
at the All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha, buckets of water, soap and hand
sanitisers were placed at the church entrances while free face masks
were given to those without face mask before they were allowed entry
into the church where they sat three in each pew to maintain physical
distancing.
The story was the same at Saint Andrews church and Saint Joseph
Catholic Parish, both in Odoakpu, Saint Monica’s Woliwo, Saint Marks,
Omagba and Our Lady’s Catholic church, Umuoji .
Speaking to the ABS, the Sub Dean, All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha,
Venerable Obiora Uzochukwu said they are out to assist the state
government in the fight against COVID-19 since the ease of the
lockdown and urged people to keep wearing the face mask in their
offices and homes while Venerable Israel Odita told the state
citizenry to remain steadfast in prayers and good works as the
coronavirus will come to pass.
Other members of the clergy who spoke on the ABS, including Venerable Samuel Ezewudo and Reverend Chinedu Nnatuanya told the state citizenry that while the state government has eased the lockdown they should follow all the directives as their safety is in their hands.
Some people including Mrs. Chika Okonkwo, Miss Faith Odike and
little Master Chukwudike Chukwuemeka who shared the lessons the
lockdown on COVID-19 taught them said, they have internalized hygienic
practices in their homes.
