An Awka Chief Magistrate Court presided over by Mike Anyadiegwu, has granted bail to one Ebuka Ojiji Ekenechukwu, with the sum of one million naira, and a surety that must be a public servant from his hometown, on level fourteen or above.

The accused is standing trial for malicious damage to government property, a Mikano generator set valued at four million naira.

Applying for the bail, the defendants counsel, S.O Iwuoba Esq. told the court that the offence which the defendant committed is a bailable one under the Anambra State Criminal Administration Justice Law.

The Police prosecutor Aduaka Achunike, opposed the bail application on the ground that the defendant had been arraigned in the same court earlier this year, for malicious damage of a Toyota Sienna vehicle as well as threat to life, arguing that granting him bail will allow him to continue with his criminal activities.

Ruling on the matter, the Magistrate said that he is giving the defendant bail because of COVID-19 pandemic which requires social distancing among others, as Police do not take new inmates any longer.

Reacting to the matter, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Security and Chairman, Enforcement and Compliance Unit, Anambra state, Prince Innocent Offordile cautioned youths in the state against social vices as anyone caught, will face the full wrath of the law.
Ebuka Ojiji Ekenechukwu who is a native of Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area had on April 23rd, 2020 burnt an Anambra state owned generator set along Amawbia-Nawfia road.
