More than ten persons are feared dead in a road crash involving a
trailer, loaded with over two hundred bags of rice and cartons of key
at the Nitel axis of the Upper Iweka.

Also, over twelve persons sustained varying degrees of injury while
six commercial tricycles and two ENTRANCO buses were damaged.
According to one of the survivors, whose Keke tricycle was crushed,
Mr. Francis Obiajulu, as he was about driving towards the MCC, he saw
the trailer driver struggling with his steering and coming in his
direction and jumping out of the tricycle, he sustained injury on his
head.

Two other survivors, Messrs Benjamin Onalu and Chijioke Ugwu who are tricycle drivers, corroborated the story and disclosed that two of their passengers died on the spot.

Two passersby, who assisted in the evacuation of those injured , Messrs Emmanuel Nazi and Onyebuchi Obinyere, called for a total ban on loading at that axis to reduce number of casualties whenever such incident happens.

A sister to one of the survivors, Mrs. Gift Jubrin, who shaded tears
of joy over his brother’s survival, thanked God for sparing his life.
On arrival at Toronto hospital, Onitsha, where all the victims were
rushed for treatment, ABS observed that the hospital was battling with
the emergency situation while relatives of the victims were thronging
in and out.

Some persons were crushed beyond recognition, noted that the driver of the trailer was at large while people’s belongings littered the scene of the accident.
