The National Population Commission in collaboration with Ministry of
Women Affairs and National Orientation Agency with support from United
Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, UNICEF has embarked
on sensitization and advocacy campaign to community stakeholders
across the twenty one Local Government Areas of Anambra State.
The government Agencies visited Isuaniocha in Awka North council
Area, Abba in Njikoka council area and Umuawulu in Awka South Council
Area to create awareness about the importance of birth registration,
ending violence against children and women and Covid-19 prevention.
Onyinye Agubaeze reports that while speaking during the exercise at the respective town halls, the state
Director National Population Commission, Mr Joachim Ulasi, who noted
that the Commission alone issues the official birth certificate, said
it is a vital registration that guarantees a person the right to an
identity that will ensure effective management of the country’s
population for sustainable development.
Mr Joachim however, pointed that the issuance of birth certificate is
free for persons below eighteen years of age while persons above
eighteen will be issued attestation of birth, appealing to the
community leaders to assist the Commission achieve its goal.
On his part, the State Director National Orientation Agency, Barrister
Charles Nwoji, who expressed worry over the alarming rise of the Covid-19 curve during the post Covid-19 lockdown, advised that the responsibility of
sound health and safety now rests with individual and as such there
should be strict observance of the stipulated preventive measures.
Also speaking , the Director Child Department of the Ministry of Women Affairs,
Mrs Nkechi Anazodo while stating that violence ranges from physical,
emotional and sexual, pointed that Anambra State government frowns at
violence against children and women.
In their separate remarks, the Presidents General of the respective
communities, Mr Frank Mkpume of Isuaniocha, Mr Benet Aniekwe of Abba
represented by Mr Osunde Ozumba and Mr Iyke Nkala of Umuawulu
appreciated the government organizations for the campaign.
