The seventh Anambra State House of Assembly has marked its first anniversary amidst numerous achievements.
The ceremony, which took place at the legislative complex, Awka started with a thanksgiving mass officiated by the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor.
House of Assembly correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim was there and reports that while addressing the gathering, the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Uche Okafor announced that in the past one year, a total of nineteen bills comprising the Executive and Members’.
bills were introduced at the floor of the House out of which ten have been passed and five assented into law.
The Speaker mentioned some of the bills that have become law to include the COVID-19 and other Dangerous infectious Disease Prevention and Eradication Bill, the 2020 Appropriation Bill, the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Repeal and Reenactment Bill and the State Information and Communication Technology Bill among others.
Right Honourable Okafor said at the last count, that no less than eighty people-oriented resolutions, touching diverse areas of the people’s welfare have been passed by the Assembly and attributed the impressive performance to the cordial relationship that exists between the Executive and Legislative Arms of government.
In the new legislative year, the Speaker stated that their target is to put up a Legislative Budget and Research Office that will also house a mini printing press with a view to having an outfit for expert budget review and analysis to promote good governance and regular publication of Assembly periodicals.
On his part, the Chairman, House Committee on Information and Culture, Honourable Okechukwu Okoye expressed joy that in the past one year, the Assembly has demonstrated an appreciable degree of competence and diligence in the discharge of its duties.
Honourable Okechukwu commended members of the Assembly for discharging their constitutional responsibilities creditably in the past one year.
