A former player of the then NEPA Football Club of Enugu, Chief Jude
Emecheta says the decision of the Nigeria Professional Football League
management to cancel the 2019/2020 league due to COVID-19 pandemic is
a welcome development.
Chief Emecheta who spoke to sports writers in Awka, said though it’s
disheartening that a club will be promoted or relegated, it will be
risky to copy some football association managements around the world
who decided to conclude their leagues amid COVID-19 pandemic, adding
that they have all its takes to contain the coronavirus pandemic.
Chief Emecheta who is also the Managing Director and Chief Executive
Officer of the Anambra State Signage and Advertisement Agency
disagreed with Gernot Rohr the Super Eagles Coach who said that no
local player can fit into the national team.
In his reaction, the Director of Sports in Awka Catholic Diocese,
Reverend Father Obinna Dike, who supported Nigeria Professional
Football League decision of no promotion, no relegation, added that
stakeholders were consulted before taking the decision.
Reverend Father Dike a licensed referee advised Super Eagles Manager
Gernort Rohr to mentor the local players in the league, so as to fish
our quality and talented players who could fit into the national team.
