Developers have been cautioned against indiscriminate cutting of trees to protect environment.

Speaking to journalists in Awka, the Managing Director of Anambra State Waste Management Authority, ASWAMA, Mr Amechi Akora urged Nigerians to join hands in the drive to achieve friendly and healthy environment.
Paul Ezeoke reports that according to experts, large scale cutting of trees can lead to deforestation which encourages global warming and threatens lives of organisms in the ecosystem.

Mr Akora said trees contribute to preserving the environment as they serve as wind and storm breakers as well as have huge economic potential including providing food for man and animals.

He explained that trees also help in providing oxygen, improving air quality and are natural habitant of animals and birds as well as help maintain urban greenery and aforestation which helps to check adverse effects of erosion, flood and other ecological challenges.

The ASWAMA Managing Director reminded real estate developers that trees help to increase property value as they improve aesthetics of any area by adding variety to landscaping, provide shade and regulate temperature.
Mr Akora expressed satisfaction that the tree planting exercise embarked upon by ASWAMA at Ekwueme Square Awka have recorded remarkable success and disclosed that the agency is partnering with some local government councils to extend the exercise to various parts of the State.
He urged physical planning agencies to encourage developers to provide adequate space for tree planting, gardens and other necessary vegetations.

Also speaking, an Environmentalist, Mr Kevin Ike lamented that human activities have remained serious threat to the environment over the years.

Mr Ike called on relevant government agencies to enforce laws that would discourage indiscriminate cutting of trees.
In his reaction, a retired civil servant, Mr Obiorah Agbu noted that trees help to improve outdoor recreational activities.
