The Nigerian Bar Association Onitsha Branch has called on the
Inspector General of Police to direct the team responsible for the
arrest of Barrister Chukwuemeka Hillary Asiegbu, to release him
unconditionally in compliance with court order which so directed.

This was the outcome of an emergency meeting of the BAR in Onitsha,
during which the chairman NBA Onitsha Branch, Barrister Steve Ononye
stressed that the Nigerian police is an institution established to
protect lives, properties of citizens as well as to maintain law and
order in the society.

He condemned the unlawful arrest and detention of Barrister Asiegbu
who has been in detention for over fourteen days despite his health
conditions, and was denied bail without being charged before any
competent court in Nigeria for any offence.

The NBA chairman described Barrister Asiegbu as an active member of
the Nigerian Bar Association Onitsha Branch, adding that he should be
released without further delay.

Barrister Asiegbu is said to be having issues with his China based
client, Mr Ignatius Okonkwo over some plots of land he assisted in
purchasing for him, but were rejected on his return.

Reacting to the unlawful arrest of Barrister Asiegbu, Barrister Henry
Nzute and Barrister Kenechukwu Oguejiofor described Barrister Asiegbu
as a young lawyer, whom younger lawyers look up to, as he is
co-ordinate, responsible and has affected lawyers positively.

Barrister Nzute said the time has come for 0police harassment to be put
on check, adding that the Nigerian Bar Association will not relent
until justice is served.
