Anambra legislators have called on residents of the state to bring back the culture of subsistence farming associated with the Igbo’s culture to ensure food security in the state and possible marketing.
The legislators made the call on Tuesday based on the motion move by the member representing Awka South One Constituency, Mr Nnamdi Okafor, during plenary in Awka
Mr Okafor said there is need for urgent awareness for everyone in the state irrespective of profession to embark on subsistence farming in order to fight the impending danger of famine associated with the present economic hardship experienced in the country .
He stressed that during the war, people in the area were able to sustain themselves through farming but since the discovery of oil farming was abandoned and called for recall of the olden days methods of living through farming.
Supporting the motion, the member for Idemili South Mr Chuks Ezenwune said that subsistence farming would assist in sustaining families thereby chasing hunger away from the state.
He encouraged people to plant crops like tomatoes, pepper, vegetable, corn, okro, yam, cassava among others to keep living than much dependency on white collar jobs which he said only give wages.
The member for Anambra East, Mr Obinna Emenaka and his Idemili North Counterpart, Mr Francis Mmegbuanaeze said that the world cannot do without farming and advocated subsistence farming as a way out of starvation.
