The global Community marks International Youth Day today . The Day which was endorsed by the United General Assembly on 17th August 1999, is commemorated on the 12th of August every year to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and celebrate the potential of youths as partners in today’s global society.

Emmanuel Okonkwo who sampled people’s opinion on the essence of the day, reports that this year’s event which has its theme as, “Youth Engagement for Global Action”, seeks to highlight the ways in which the engagement of young people at the local, national and global levels is enriching national and multilateral institutions and processes, as well as draw lessons on how their representation and engagement in formal institutional politics can be significantly enhanced and respond to global challenges.

Speaking on the celebration, the Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Venerable Amaechi Okwuosa who described youths as very crucial in the development of any society, opined that youths should be encouraged and put in line of action to minimize crimes and criminality, and as well make them useful for themselves and the society at large.

On his part, the Publicity Secretary Joint National Association of Persons with Disability, Anambra state chapter, Mr Ifeanyichukwu Igwegbe, while regretting that youths with disability are not given the opportunity to harness their potential in this part of the world both at government and community levels as they are most of the times considered as irrelevant, commended Governor Willie Obiano for giving youths with disability chance to prove their mettle.

Some youths that commented on the issue including Miss Chidinma Ikeanyionwu and Miss Onyinye Okoye said that government should create more employment opportunities for the teaming youths so as to enable them secure job on graduation.
