Governor Willie Obiano has expressed dissatisfaction over lavish weddings, burials and other ceremonies in parts of the state in the face of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.

Governor Obiano who stated this during a statewide broadcast held at the Governor’s Lodge, Onitsha, stressed that security agencies were on high alert to enforce compliance of not more than fifty persons per sitting.
Government House Correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that the Governor further disclosed that so far, one hundred and ninety-two thousand samples have been collected, out of which nine hundred and twenty-three came out negative while one hundred and sixty were positive cases.

He said that out of the total number, one hundred and twenty-five have been discharged, seventeen are receiving treatment in their respective homes, while eighteen people have died, emphasizing that COVID-19 is everywhere now, as such people should be vigilant.

He made clear that his administration will not fail to close down markets where the protocols are flouted and disclosed that with the activation of the mobile courts, three hundred people have been found guilty for flouting the COVID-19 protocols, stressing that enforcement will continue.

According to the Governor, his administration has sustained efforts towards contain the spread of the virus including
training of COVID-19 Response Teams in the epicenters of the state, purchase of over twenty –five thousand PPEs, activation of COVID-19 testing lab at the GeneXpert laboratory in Onitsha, making it the first COVID-19 test lab in a General Hospital in Nigeria.

The Governor asked people to feel free to walk in there and get tested every time of the day, stressing that early detection is important to survive the virus.

He commended the frontline health workers who are combating the spread of the virus and expressed optimism that tertiary institutions in the state will re-open next week.
