Scores of people including women and children have sustained varying degrees of injury following an accident on Nkpor/Umuoji Road by Inland Doors limited, involving a long tanker that rammed into vehicles, stopped by the police on duty.


According to one of the victims, Mr. Christian Godwin, the driver of the tanker, loaded with Premium Motor Spirit, noticed brake failure and was signaling vehicles to make way from afar but the police, could not immediately discharge the numerous vehicles they were holding, before the tanker finally hit the vehicles and stopped some meters away.


Another victim, Brother Chinenye Ani, the driver of an eighteen seater commercial bus loaded with passengers told the ABS that after settling the police, he saw the loaded tanker coming down with speed and parked off the road though it still affected his bus and upturned it.


Mr. Ani, who thanked God that no life was lost, except for the injuries sustained by his passengers and himself, recalled several accident along Nkpor/Umuoji road caused by stop and search police men.


Another driver of a Lexus Jeep, Mr. Chibuzor Ani said he was stopped by one police man, Haruna Benson, who collected one thousand naira from him after detaining him for hours before the incident happened, lamented that the policemen took off immediately after the accident.


ABS observed that six vehicles including a tricycle were involved in the accident.
Some women, who were injured, were seen lavishing praises to God for sparing their lives while some; especially children were rushed to nearby hospitals.


Another eye witness, who chose to remain anonymous, pleaded with government and police authority to look into the activities of some policemen, who work along that axis as they always create unnecessary traffic noting that the accident would have been averted if those vehicles were not stopped.


The policemen on duty at that point, left the scene of the accident with the driver and conductor of the tanker.
The accident, which badly damaged some vehicles, caused heavy traffic without loss of life.
