As Anambra state marks twenty-nine years of existence today , traders
in markets across the state are recounting growth in the market sector
over the years just as they also call for more development in the
sector.

Anambra state since creation, has witnessed both military and civilian
leaderships who made various efforts and contributions towards the
development and progress of various sectors of the state’s economy.
Market sector was not left behind in this struggle towards a better
Anambra evident in the establishment of more markets, construction of
modern structures, drilling of borehole facilities in the markets,
among other things.
Speaking to the ABS on the development, a trader at Uwakwe Ukaegbu
International Building Materials Market, Umuokpu Awka, Chief Chukwudi
Nwankwo who is also the President General of the market, recalled how
scanty markets were in the state in 1990s, as well as poor state of facilities in the
then markets especially under military regimes.
Chief Nwankwo who noted that markets in the state started seeing the
light when civilian government took over the state’s leadership in
1999 as traders started airing their views on how the marketwould be favourable to both traders and the government, observed that
a lot of achievements have been made in markets across the state by
past and present administration of Chief Willie Obiano and called for
more improvement in markets across the state.
On his part, the Chairman Oyeagu Abagana market, Chief Ugochukwu
Nwokaka while commending founding fathers of the state for their
efforts, commended Governor Obiano for various policies made in favour
of traders in the state, and pointed out that if government could
construct more modern structures in markets across the state, more
revenue will be raised for the development of the state.
