The old Anambra state comprising the present Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi
states was created in 1976 by the late General Murtala Mohammed, while
the new Anambra was created by General Ibrahim Babangida, on August
27, 1991.In this special report, Queen Anigbogu, ascertained governments’
intervention over the years in the Primary Health Centre.
Speaking with the ABS, the Deputy Director Nursing, Maternal and Child
Health, Amawbia, Mrs Ifeyinwa Anigbogu, said that the Primary Health
Care in the state has evolved over the years to the present status and strong presence in various parts of the State because of the efforts of several
groups.
She mentioned the groups to include the government, management and
staff of Primary Health Care Development Agency and Ndi Anambra whose
patronage of the services of Primary Health Centre has increased
tremendously over the years unlike before when Primary Health Centre was regarded as
a health facility for the poor.
Mrs Anigbogu revealed that there are more Primary Health Centres
across communities in the present Anambra than what was
obtainable in the past.
Speaking on areas that need improvement, Mrs Anigbogu, explained that
the Primary Health Centre facilities and manpower need regular
maintenance to enable it to continue to provide quality services.
In his reaction , the traditional ruler of Okpuno, Awka South Council
Area, Igwe Sunday Okafor, recalled how the new Anambra state took off
without receiving the usual subvention given to new states from the
federal government.
He, however, noted that through the concerted efforts of subsequent
governments over the years, Anambra state at twenty nine has developed
as the best state in almost everything.
On the government’s interventions on Primary Health Centre, Igwe
Okafor commended government’s efforts towards the establishment of the
centres across the state but appealed for its intervention in
refurbishing the Okpuno Primary Health Centre.
Also speaking, a retired civil servant, Mrs Grace Ndubisi, said the
Primary Health Centre services of the new Anambra is more of
grassroot-oriented with a human touch and thanked the government and
the management of the centres for their efforts.
