As Anambra state marks the twenty ninth year’s anniversary of its
creation, health correspondent Chibuzor Okoye takes a look at the
journey so far in the Healthcare sector.

X-raying the health care sector since transition to democracy in 1999,
a public health expert, Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi said that the state has
witnessed a lot of different reforms in terms of health care services.

According to Dr. Onyemaechi who is the Special Adviser to Governor
Willie Obiano on Health, the Chinwoke Mbadinuju administration under
late Dr Ben Anyaele as Commissioner for Health entrenched community
mobilization and participation in healthcare services but that did
not continue as they leave Office.

Dr. Onyemaechi explained that Dr. Chris Ngige’s administration focused
more on fixing and revamping secondary health care facilities, as well
as ensuring that they have basic medical doctors.

The Special Adviser who is also the Executive Secretary, Anambra State
Health Insurance Agency revealed that Mr. Peter Obi’s administration
under Professor Amobi Ilika as Commissioner for Health, focused more
on rural outreach to ensure equity and access to healthcare services,
revamp hospitals and established the Anambra state Teaching Hospital,
but noted that  a lot were not on ground to keep the Teaching Hospital running
effectively.

Dr. Onyemaechi noted that Governor Willie Obiano understanding
perfectly that government is a continuum, focused on both tertiary,
secondary and primary health care, and immediately got all the
necessary accreditations for the Teaching Hospital, graduate the first
set of medical doctors, get accreditation for Residency training which
is one of the key components of Teaching Hospitals among others.
