The Federal Government is to spend between two hundred and sixty-nine point three-eight billion naira and four hundred and ninety-seven point one-three billion naira on the provision of six million free meters to various unmetered power users across the country.

Also, findings from separate quarterly reports of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on the power sector shows that the number of unmetered customers in Nigeria has reduced by two hundred and ten thousand, three hundred and fifty-nine.

It was also gathered that about two hundred and forty-five thousand, nine hundred and sixteen unmetered power consumers will not benefit from the six million free meters, as Nigeria currently has about six million two hundred and forty-five thousand nine hundred and sixteen.

It was also gathered that the mass metering scheme took effect after a recent directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Based on the directive, the Central Bank of Nigeria approved guidelines for funding the programme, which entails that all meters under the scheme will be locally sourced in order to create more jobs.
