The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said that it will announce a definite date for the fifteen outstanding bye elections in eleven states after a meeting with stakeholders next week.
According to the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Barrister Festus Okoye, the bye elections earlier scheduled for thirty-first October 2020, were suspended after consultations with Resident Electoral Commissioners owing to the security situation in the country at the time.
Ekwi Ajide of our Abuja bureau reports that Barrister Okoye in a press release to journalists, stated that at a meeting to further review the situation, the Commission decided that since it suffered extensive damage and vandalization of its local government offices and facilities, including the areas where the bye-elections were scheduled to hold, there is a need to consult all the critical stakeholders in the electoral process before deciding on a definite date.
He said the Commission will consult political parties and Civil Society Organizations on Tuesday, the tenth of November 2020 while it meets with the media and Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security on Wednesday, eleventh November just as it would meet with the Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday, twelfth November to decide on a date.
Barrister Okoye, appealed to all stakeholders to continue to cooperate with the Commission in its efforts to conduct credible elections under a safe and conducive environment.
