The founder “Save A Soul for Africa Foundation” Sir Ogo Ezeonu has appealed to Anambra State government to intervene on the gully erosion threatening Umunemelum community in Nnobi, Idemili South Local Government Area.
He made the call when officials of the Anambra State Ministry of Environment and National Erosion and Watershed Management Programme, NEWMAP visited the area.

The people of Umunemelum community of Nnobi in Idemili South local government area of the state have remained in fear of the threat to their life, houses and means of livelihood.

In attempts to manage the erosion site which continued to expand on daily basis, the villagers dug catchment pits, constructed drainage channels, and planted cashew and bamboo treesibut these attempts yielded no positive outcome.
The situation was, however, compounded during rain fall in the community between the 10th and 13th of October 2020.

Hectares of farm lands were washed away, while fences of some houses were pulled into the erosion.

Sir Ogo who is a farmer and whose house is also threatened by the erosion called on the State and federal governments to come to their rescue.

Some of the farmers present during the visit, including Messrs Chucks Nze and Christopher Echefuo who is also the chairman Agu Committee Umunemelum community, pleaded with the government to come to their aid and save their lives.

Responding to their call, the team leader from the Anambra State Ministry of Environment, Mr Pascal Okafor noted that their visit was to ascertain the level of damage done by the erosion and report to the state government.

The team visited three different erosion sites in the community and some other areas washed away by the flood.
