The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has assured delivery of the second Niger Bridge on schedule.

Mr. Fashola stated this during a Town Hall meeting on project update of the construction of the main works of the second Niger Bridge.
The event was held at the Asaba end of the Second Niger Bridge Site.


Minister Fashola who noted that the project is on course, notwithstanding loss of some weeks, thanked both states and other stakeholders for their support, assuring that the delivery date still stands, in line with commitment of President Buhari.
While stating that compensation is ongoing, Mr. Fashola said that the total cost of the entire project is four hundred and fourteen billion naira, noting that the bridge itself is two hundred and six billion naira, while roads 2A and 2B costs a whopping two hundred and eight billion naira.


On Zik’s Mausoleum, the Minister explained that he visited the project on the President’s directive and would report back to him once he returns to Abuja . Responding, Governor Obiano, who thanked President Buhari for ensuring that work on the project is on course, urged the federal government to keep to their commitments to both sides of the divide in a bid to deliver it by February, 2022.
While reassuring of support from Anambra state government, the Governor called for peace within the host communities, pointing out that the project has huge economic prospects.


Managing Director of Julius Berger, Dr. Lars Richter, highlighted the key socio economic benefits of the bridge, stressing that the existing first bridge cannot hold on in the future, hence the need for second bridge to cater for traffic for the next fifty years.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the South East Traditional Rulers Council and Traditional Ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, emphasized that the host communities do not want to be left behind as the project advances, calling for a beautiful and strong bridge.


Delta state Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa was represented at the event by Secretary to Delta state government, Mr. Chinedu Ebie.


Construction of the main works of the second Niger Bridge which is over fifty percent complete consists majorly of eleven-point-nine-zero kilometer project length, seven-point-zero kilometer length of approach road at the Onitsha side, one-point-six kilometer of the main bridge across River Niger and three-point-three kilometer length of approach road at the Asaba side.

The Minister Fashola and Governor Obiano earlier visited the Ziks Mausoleum for inspection.
