Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, on Monday, 7th December, 2020 at the pedestrian bridge, Unizik Temporary Site Junction, Awka, apprehended three begging syndicates using underaged children to seek for alms.
The Commissioner reacted following calls by concerned citizens during her appearance on a radio program at Anambra Broadcasting Service, 88.5 Fm Awka, the callers during the call-in program, complained about the number of children being deployed as beggers at some pedestrian bridges in major cities in the state.
While responding to their request to clear the bridges from beggars, Lady Mezue assured of immediate action to clear the mentioned locations starting from Awka to other major cities.
During the raid at Awka, seven children and three women were apprehended and were subsequently repatriated to their local council areas of Aniocha and Njikoka, while a Northerner among them was handed over to Hajia Hausa community in Anambra State, with Provisions, food items and transport fare provided to all.
Lady Mezue, before the repatriation warned them against engaging in begging and other vices to avoid prosecution and jail for endangering lives of children.
