Awka Zone has emerged winner of the 2020 Young Readers’ Club Annual Competition.,The competition which took place at the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, Headquarters, Awka, is an ASUBEB programme organized under Young Readers’ Club, Anambra State Chapter for government-owned schools only.
Blessing Uchendu reports that the Young Readers’ Club, YRC, is an all-student body that aims at preparing primary school pupils and secondary school students for both the prestigious Governor and Presidential debates on topical events like, recitation, poems, vibrant reading, standard drama, debate, book review, spelling and pronunciation, identification of letters, words and objects among others.,The participants were primary and junior secondary school students drawn from the six Educational Zones in Anambra State.
At the end of the competition in which the participating zones were tested on essay, reading speech accuracy, comprehension, debate and book review, Awka Zone came first in Primary School category while Nnewi and Onitsha Zones clinched the second position, after scoring equal points in all tests.
Also In the Junior Secondary Category, Awka Zone and Onitsha Zones clinched the first position after securing equal points in all tests evaluations.,Speaking shortly after the exercise, some representatives of the participating zones, including Henry Dennis, Ifeoma Okeke and Chinemerem Okonkwo, said that the competition has magnified their individual abilities and equally encouraged them to study harder, and applauded the organizers of the competition.,Addressing the pupils and students, the Anambra State Commissioner for Basic Education, Professor Kate Omenugha, represented by Mrs Vivian Nzewi, noted that the ministry collaborates with the association to enable children cultivate healthy reading habits, which, she said, would go a long way in helping them shape their potential and drive their academic pursuit.
In their separate remarks, the Chairman ASUBEB, Chief Patrick Ugboaja, Director Academic Services of the Board, Lady Stella Ezepue and the Desk Officer, English, Mrs Grace Ebem, commended Governor Willie Obiano for his grassroots educational development, noting that the competition would help to promote unity, culture of dialogue and good communication skills among Anambra students.
