Youths of Umuona Community in Aguata Local Government Area have embarked on peaceful protest over alleged exclusion from scheduled Town Union election.

The youths who marched through the community market square carried placards with various inscriptions such as “every citizen of Umuona above eighteen years must vote”, ” free and fair election is all we need in Umuona Town”, “It is our civic responsibility to vote ” among others.

The youths insisted that they have come of age to participate actively in affairs of the Community in line with the constitution of the country.

Our man Paul Ezeoke reports that  the spokesman for the youths, Mr Chukwujekwu Okanimme alledged that exclusion of the youths from voting in the election was a violation of the constitution of the town and a plot by the traditional ruler to impose unpopular candidate on the community as President General.

He said several attempts made in the past to project their views in affairs of the community were frustrated inspite of their numerous contributions to the development of the town including palliative works they have done on access roads in the area.

He also alleged that the leadership of the community has refused several calls to review the constitution of the town to accommodate interest of the youths and emerging realities of the day.

When contacted, the traditional ruler of Umuona Igwe Humphrey Ejesieme assured that nobody will stop the youths from voting during the election but stated that all eligible voters must be financially up to date as specified by the constitution.

Igwe Ejesieme said he was reaching out to all stakeholders and interest groups to resolve all issues to ensure they have peaceful town union election.
