Despite the establishment of mobile courts in Anambra State to ensure total compliance to the monthly sanitation exercises by motorists and pedestrians, the January edition of the exercise recorded low compliance.
During the monitoring of the exercise, about fifteen persons were tried and given different fines ranging from one thousand to five thousand naira or an option of imprisonment for violating sanitation laws.
At the popular Arroma Junction, Eke Awka, Amawbia, Nkwo Amaenyi and Eke Nibo, ABS observed that motorists and pedestrians were seen going about their normal businesses despite efforts by staff of the Anambra State Ministry of Environment and OCHA Brigade to close up the various State roads and junctions.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the sanitation exercise, the Director, Environmental Health Pollution Control, Anambra State Ministry of Environment, Mrs Edith Ikeh, said that the January edition marked the first in 2021 and as such, the Ministry has strategized plans to partner the transport sector to always shutdown parks and vehicular movements during the exercise.
Mrs Ikeh also noted that the Ministry is equally working on its manpower to expand its task force team in the State in order to ensure full compliance in all parts of the State.
For Mrs. Cecilia Umeadi from Nimo, the reason for neglect in the monthly sanitation is lack of serious enforcement and advised Ndi Anambra to be law abiding and pay attention to the sanitation exercise which in turn will be beneficial to all.
Some of the apprehended persons including Damian Okoye, Chidera Okonkwo, Godspower Anyaoke, Hassan Mohammed, Comfort Ethimdan and Ngozi Obedibe all pleaded guilty to the charges but suggested stronger sensitization and enforcement.
The presiding magistrate while reading out the sanitation offences said that the individuals have violated Section twenty-four of the sanitation law.
